Biocontrol potential of Agromyces allii 130935 and its metabolites against root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita

Meloidogyne incognita is a root-knot nematode that causes serious damage to crops. An actinomycete, Agromyces allii 130935, isolated from lichens exhibited nematicidal activity against second-stage juveniles of M. incognita. The nematicidal activity of the ethyl acetate phase of A. allii 130935 reached 89% and 96% at 8 h and 24 h, respectively. Four compounds, namely 2-hydroxyundecanoic acid, 4-(2-furanylcarbonyl)-3-hydroxy-5-phenyl-2 (5H)-furanone, 1-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-methanediol, and 2-[[[(5-nitro-2-furanyl)carbonyl]amino]oxy]-propanoic acid, were isolated and identified from the ethyl acetate phase of A. allii 130935. All the four compounds showed a certain toxic effect against the second-stage juveniles of M. incognita at 24 h. Compound 2-[[[(5-nitro-2-furanyl)carbonyl]amino]oxy]-propanoic acid caused 50% mortality at a concentration of 200 mu g mL(-1) within 24 h. Field experiments confirmed that the ethyl acetate extract of A. allii 130935 significantly reduced root galls, with a control effect 50%. Our results indicate that A. allii 130935 and its metabolites are potential biocontrol agents against M. incognita.
