A general mathematical treatment is developed that reduces chargedparticle activation analysis of thick samples to almost the simplicity of neutron activation. To determine the detection limits for beryllium, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and fluorine, thick and thin targets were irradiated with 5-and 10-mev 3He ions. The results show that these elements can be easily detected in the concentration range of parts per billion. In particular, oxygen can be rapidly determined with high sensitivity by assaying 2-minute, sO. Curves of detection limits for oxygen vs. range and atomic number are given for several reac-tions. The neutron outputs from reac-tions of 10-mev 3He particles with lithium, beryllium, and boron were measured and compare favorably with those from (d+ f) reactions in conventional neutron generators. Furthermore, the neutron yields from 3He irradiations do not decrease with target usage. The yield of high-energy-rays (~ 20 mev) is also significant. These resultssuggest that a small cyclotron, built for Re-activation analysis, could be effectively used for fast-neutron and photoactivation analysis.
