The internal labor markets in France are presently formed around two structural standards : a weakness of an initial formation and the definition of qualifications stemming from the position occupied in the workplace. From this framework, seniority plays a central role in the dynamics of the labor market and wage determination. The crisis, the radical transformations of the education system and the appearance of production obligations have put into question the present system. In particular, wage determination on the basis of seniority has dropped considerably between 1984-1989 to the point of being negative for certain wage categories.
