The measure of a society’s humanity is revealed in how it treats its most vulnerable members, whether that vulnerability arises from complex health conditions, economic hardship, or lack of social justice. Children with a tracheostomy and their family members often display admirable strength, resilience, and grit, obscuring life’s formidable challenges with a tracheostomy–and the need for support. We read with great interest the work of Gursoy et al.(Gursoy et al., 2022), which affords a window into the lives of caregivers of children with a tracheostomy, exploring psychosocial health and providing sociodemographic context. From our perspectives as the parent of a child with a tracheostomy, a nurse leader in tracheostomy care, and a surgeon involved in quality improvement, this study depicts current challenges but underscores the need to achieve a deeper understanding and enact purposeful interventions. The study’s findings of high anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem do not reflect individual frailty but rather fraying of the social fabric and a call to action to improve social support, gender equity, and economic security. This reframing of findings motivates efforts toward improving care practices and public policies that ensure families need not “go it alone.”
