All healers engage with energy, whether they are trauma surgeons, nurse–midwives, psychotherapists, or energy practitioners; it is impossible not to. In energy medicine, however, practitioners hold the unique position of being integral and inseparable parts of the treatment. The practitioner serves as a catalyst for change in the healing encounter. Assessment of practitioners in energy medicine trials is frequently limited to identifying their healing modalities, although recent recommendations expand this somewhat (Warber, et al., 2003). A deeper investigation of the practitioner as an instrument of change can only enrich our understanding of mechanisms of action and the nature of healing itself. It is our contention that what might be termed the spiritual development and spiritual alignment of the practitioner are powerful variables in this regard. Training programs for energy healing and other complementary and alternative medicine systems often emphasize the spiritual development of the practitioner, but this dimension has not been considered in energy medicine trials.
