When welds are used in an as-deposited condition in severe corrosion environments, their properties generally deteriorate greatly because of solidification segregation and resulting structural inhomogeneity. 1-2 To improve the properties of solidified structures, therefore, welds in high performance stainless steels and high alloy materials need to be more highly alloyed than the base materials. In some cases, Ni based alloys are applied. 3-4 Therefore, in this study, the behaviour and characteristics of solidification were systematically investigated with a wide range of Cr-Ni-Fe-Mo alloys to clarify the extent of solidification microsegregation, the precipitation of intermetallic phases in the as-welded condition, and the solidification modes which determine the service performance of as-deposited structures. The study also covered the effects of additional elements and the relationship between solidification structures and calculated equilibrium diagrams.
