METHODSGuinea pigs were anesthetized with methoxyflurane, and a 2-to 3-cm segment of superior mesenteric artery (500-600, um in diameter) was removed. The segments were slit open to form a sheet to allow microelectrode, penetration from the internal surface of the vessel. Microelectrode penetrations were made between the longitudinal strands of connective tissue that were visible under a dissecting microscope. The arterial strip was placed in a nonrecirculating organ bath (vol 10 ml) at 37OC for continual suffusion with a physiologic salt solution containing (mM): 141 Na’, 4.7 K’, 1.8 Ca2’, 0.76 Mg”+, 124 Cl-, 1.7 HZPOQ, 25 HCO $ and 11 glucose.
