A parvovirus was identified by electron microscopy in faecal and intestinal material from young dogs with sudden onset of vomiting and the passing of profuse, watery greyish faeces sometimes flecked with blood. The virus was cultured in a continuous dog kidney cell line (GH) and a feline embryonic cell line (FEA); propagation was best in the latter. Parvovirus-like particles were also identified in one case of myocarditis. Young puppies 3-4 weeks old with acute fatal myocarditis had had no history of intestinal disease, while adult dogs and puppies of 8-10 weeks old with enteritis did not show cardiac lesions. However, some puppies aged 5-6 weeks and primarily showing enteritis had intranuclear inclusions in cardiac myocytes, although no active myocarditis was present. The different cardiac and enteric syndrome may reflect the tropism of parvoviruses for rapidly growing and dividing cells and the differences in the growth rates of cardiac and intestinal cells at different ages.
