Materials and methodsClinical dental examinations were completed during the spring and summer of 1980 for 1,094 residents at the facility. Examinations were performed by two teams of dental examiners-ach consisting of one dentist and one assistant-who are members of the dental staff at the center. Clinical examinations were performed using no. 5 plane mouth mirrors, no. 5 explorers, and periodontal probes. Teams were calibrated for 5 days to ensure uniform interpretation of the criteria being studied and consistent recording of the observed conditions. Throughout the survey, every effort was made to maintain standardized examination procedures and recording of results. The dental health survey included age, gender, medical diagnosis, degree of mental ability, measure of periodontal disease, dental caries, occlusal relations, and treatment requirements. No radiographic examinations were performed because few residents were able to cooperate.
