IN 1951 HOLLANDER et al. dem onstrated the usefulness of hypodermic injec tion of hydrocortisone into selected arthritic joints. 1 Aides and Jadeson were among the first to report in American literature that ultra sound was effective in the management of osteo arthritis. 2 In 1954 Fellinger and Schmid re ported success in using an ointment containing hydrocortisone applied to the skin and driven in with ultrasound for treatment of digital joints afflicted with polyarthritis. 3 The early reports of Hollander and Aides have been confirmed by many writers. 4-7In regard to experimental evidence, some of the present authors have previously established that Cortisol applied to the skin of swine, in situ, could be driven in with ultrasound and recovered from paravertebral muscle8 and nerve. 9 In 1964 Novak reported experimental transmission of lidocaine into rabbit muscle. 10 Cameroy has used ultrasonic driven Carbocaine® as an aid to anesthesia prior to reducing Colles' fractures. 11
