Presents data gathered over 5 yrs on 50 younger insomniacs (20 men with a mean age of 43.6 yrs and 30 women with a mean age of 45.3 yrs), 25 older insomniacs (8 men with a mean age of 68.6 yrs and 17 women with a mean age of 69.9 yrs), and 12 noncomplaining sleepers (6 men with a mean age of 22.8 yrs and 6 women with a mean age of 27.3 yrs). Insomniacs complained of chronically disturbed sleep as well as impaired daytime functioning. Typically, Ss slept in the laboratory 1–3 nights and were administered benzodiazepines or placebo before daytime testing. Daytime testing consisted of performance testing at various intervals throughout the day and the Multiple Sleep Latency Test. Results show that 29% of insomniacs had little or no daytime drowsiness, while 8 insomniacs evidenced sleepiness that was pathological. There was considerable overlap between the sleep parameters of Ss who complained of sleepiness and those of noncomplainers. Results of experiments in which various benzodiazepines were used indicate that drugs with a longer half-life carried over greater sedative effects into the next day.(31 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
