Since the great theories of evolution in the nineteenth century, sociology has been interested in the question as to whether modernity should be interpreted as a process of civilization which, if it does not actually nip violence and barbarism in the bud, then at least limits their extent. The issue is dealt with within the parameters of two extremes: the optimistic narrative of progress, which sees civilization as the principle of modernization, and the pessimistic interpretation, which emphasizes the murderous potential of dynamics of coercion and discipline (Miller & Soeffner, 1996).
