Abstract The International Sodar Intercomparison Experiment (ISIE) offered a unique opportunity to test in detail the capabilities of commercial Doppler sodars to measure the mean wind and wind variance. The ISIE was held between 6 and 22 September 1988. Three commercial sodars were placed within 300 m of the base of the 300-m high Boulder Atmospheric Observatory (BAO) tower. The sodars operated concurrently, allowing flexibility and simplicity in the comparisons. The results presented here compare sodar second moment calculations of the wind averaged over 20-min periods with similar calculations from sonic anemometers at three levels on the BAO tower. The standard deviations of the vertical wind, σw and the cross-wind component, σv, are statistically compared. The sodar-derived σwquantities compare reasonably well, white σv quantities compare poorly with the sonic anemometer-derived quantities. These results were expected because of the increased variance in the sodar σv calculations caused by the tempor...
