The solubility of ethyl acetate in a number of aqueous alkali halide and quaternary ammonium iodide solutions has been investigated by means of the turbidimetric method at electrolyte concentrations from 0.025 to 0.400 M and in the temperature range from 20 to 40. Theexperimental activity coefficients have been compared with those calculated from various equations based on the assumption of coulombic interactions. While fairly good semiquantitative agreement is found for ethyl acetate in solutions of alkali chlorides and bromides, the experimental activity coefficients for ethyl acetate in alkali fluoride solutions are somewhat higher than those found theoretically. The theoretical activity coefficients are uniformly higher than and even differ in sign from the coefficients found experimentally for ethyl acetate in alkali and quaternary ammonium iodide solutions. The additional influence of dispersionforces is discussed qualitatively. Solu-bility parameters, k „calculated from the McDevit-Long theory are compared with the k, found experimentally. The importance in salt effect theory of the discrete structure of the solvent is discussed.
