This paper is a mathematical study of the diffraction of plane waves by a semi-infinite grating of small cylinders. The grating elements are assumed to be small compared to a wave length and to be widely spaced. All interactions between the elements are taken into account by means of the discrete Wiener-Hopf technique. The resulting scattered field is shown to be composed of a certain set of plane waves plus a cylindrical wave. The so-called resonant or Rayleigh spacings are considered as limiting cases of the general solution. The exact solution is compared with that obtained by single scattering and by Kirchhoff type approximations.
