In the future, the American GPS and the European Galileo Satellite Systems together will offer around 60 satellites for positioning and navigation. Despite technical differences between these two systems, the commonality of the center frequencies they use creates the potential to develop an interoperable navigation satellite receiver. Firstly, we evaluate the performance of both systems separately in terms of position accuracy. In order to assess the position accuracy, we describe the influence of the main error sources on the position solution. Furthermore, we will investigate the impact of the geometry of the satellite constellation relative to the user position. Finally, we will show the accuracy capability for a combined processing of Galileo and GPS signals.
