Manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) is a nuclear encoded mitochondrial enzyme which protects this organelle from the toxic effects of superoxide radicals that are generated as a by-product of biological oxidations isolated a cDNA coding for the mouse enzyme from a placental library in Xgt1O by cross-hybridization with the human cDNA (2); one of 125,000 clones hyoridized with the probe. The deduced amino acid sequence of the 222 amino acid protein, including a 24 residue leader peptide, possesses 89.6% identity with human MnSOD (2,3):leader peptide, 514.2% identity; mature protein, This clone lacks a canonical polyadenylation signal, AATAAA, upstream of the polyA tract.
