The following proposal for a banding nomenclature for the Chinese hamster chromosomes was prepared as the result of a recommendation made at the ROTTERDAM CONFERENCE (1974) by the committee on chromo some markers. 1 It has been circulated to the laboratories of Drs. PL PEARSON, EHY CHU, U. FRANCKE, and TC Hsu and was approved for publication at the BALTIMORE CONFERENCE (1975). If adopted, it will allow the designation of the Chinese hamster chromosomes in a manner similar to that proposed for the human chromosomes at the PARIS CONFERENCE (1971) 2and will provide a base line for the characterization of Chinese hamster cell lines as well as simplifying the description of structural rearrangements involving the Chinese hamster chromosomes in somatic cell hybrids.
