Measurements were made of 12,000 droplets collected on celluloid slides held in front of the mouth during sneezing, coughing and speaking. Congo red or other dye was introduced into the mouth before each test to facilitate recognition of the droplets. 21,000 stain-containing droplet nuclei on oiled slides exposed in a slit-sampler were measured. The original droplets were considered to have varied in size from 1 to 2,000 with the majority (about 95%) being < 100 [mu] in diam. and those between 4 and 8 [mu] most numerous. The proportion of smaller droplets was greater in sneezing than in coughing or speaking. The droplet nuclei ranged from 0.25 [mu] to 42 [mu], the majority being 12 [mu] or less and those of 1-2 [mu] most common. It was calculated that of a million droplets in an ordinary sneeze about 62,000 bacteria-containing droplets are small enough to remain airborne; for a cough the calc. no. was 710 and, for speaking loudly 100 words, the comparable figure was 36. Persistence of droplet-nuclei was also studied in sneezing expts. in a 1700 cu. ft. room and in a 70 cu. ft chamber. 90% of the bacteria-carrying particles disappeared in 30 to 60 min.; smaller nuclei, few of which contained bacteria, remained airborne much longer. When a fan was used during an expt., the duration of droplet-nuclei was much more brief.
