Yasuhara et al.(2005) demonstrated the presence of Propionibacterium spp. in vitreous samples from sarcoidosis patients. Based on this observation, the authors further postulated the aetiological role of Propionibacterium spp. in the pathogenesis of sarcoidosis uveitis (Yasuhara et al. 2005). The authors cited the pioneering work of Ishige et al.(1999) on the identification of Propionibacterium acnes DNA in lymph node tissue from 15 sarcoidosis patients as the possible inspiration for the present study. However, they appear to be unaware that Ishige et al.(2005) recently indicated the possibility of Propionibacterium acnes as a commensal rather than a true pathogeneic agent in sarcoidosis. Interestingly, this latest bystander role of Propionibacterium acnes might revoke the initial speculative causality between Propioni-bacterium acnes and sarcoidosis (Ishige et al. 2005). Given this new finding, we are keen to learn from Yasuhara and associates about their re-interpretation of their PCR result.
