Lung cancer, predominantly non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), is a deadly disease with a 5-year survival rate of <15%. A number of environmental and genetic risk factors for lung cancer have been identified. Cigarette smoking is a well-recognized risk factor for lung cancer. Approximately 85% of lung cancers are caused by cigarette smoking. Epidemiological studies suggested an association of NSCLC with genetic susceptibility in the general population, and a recent study suggested that genetic polymorphisms in apoptotic pathway genes may attribute partly to this predisposition [1].
