Urinary tract infections, which occur in 2% to 7% of all pregnant women, may result in significant maternal and fetal morbidity. Fortunately, screening for, and treatment of, asymptomatic bacteriuria during pregnancy can prevent much of this morbidity. Women at increased risk for urinary tract infections during pregnancy include those with a prior hi;tory of urinary tract infection during pregnancy, diabetes, certain hemoglobinopathies, and renal anomalies.
