So far little is known about the tissue pigments of the myriapods1, except that there is xanthommatin or a nearly related ommatin in some iulids2 and a water-soluble, violet pigment in some opisthogoneates3. The polydesmids, although rather closely related to the iulids, contrast sharply in morphological details and colour, which prompted this investigation of the integumental pigments of P. angustus. These differ from those of Iulus even more than anticipated.
