The synthesis of sterols and fatty acids in rat brain was maximum at about 18 days old as judged by incorporation into lipids of 3H from 3H2O given subcutaneously. There was little or no interconversion in the blood of injected acetoacetate, D-(-)-3-hydroxybutyrate and glucose in rats 18 days old and respective half-lives in blood were 4.7, 7.4 and 31 min. The ratio of disintegrations/min of 14C in sterols/g brain to that in fatty acids was 0.5 for acetoacetate and 3-hydroxybutyrate compared with 0.23 to 0.30 for glucose, octanoate and acetate.
