This paper will point out the requirements for viable remote and virtual laboratories in terms of technological infrastructures, tools and methodology for coaching and setting up learning and teaching scenarios. The integration issue of virtual laboratories within a software environment to deliver courses or learning events at a distance over the Internet will be discussed as well. Other challenging concerns are the team-oriented building methodology and the remote laboratory management.
