Ask yourself this: does the field of Creative Writing in universities worldwide still proceed on shaky premises, inadequately equipped as a site of human knowledge? If it is adequately equipped then what, in fact, is its epistemological shape, what is the nature of the knowledge it contains, considers and advances? Perhaps not everything has been missed. Certainly, some points of action have been drawn from cognate fields. The following has been considered to date: (a) some final pieces of Creative Writing examined in the study of Literature, Film, Drama etc; (b) some writers’ lives biographical studies, mostly of famous or relatively famous creative writers; (c) some aspects of process elements, at least, of the ‘experiential’ study of Creative Writing that often forms the basis of a field where ‘pedagogic’ discussion has frequently occurred as ‘subject’ discussion; (d) some aspects of societal or cultural context. Is this enough: a consideration of some of the evidence? And from what point of view? Is considering Creative Writing evidence through discourses that are not drawn from direct engagement with Creative Writing practice likely to result in false conclusions? The basic tenets of Philosophy ask us to proceed with this in mind: false premises, they warn us, produce false conclusions.
