The Engineering Concepts Curriculum Project developed the texts, which integrated the study of science and technology in the secondary school curriculum and served as a model for other projects. The deciding factor was the opportunity to learn about the emerging information technologies and to teach a new course dealing with engineering concepts.... the hard work was very worthwhile because for the first time in my teaching career my students and I were engaged in analyzing and solving real world problems that required application of science and math concepts. of the course and laboratory curriculum include exposing students to math, science, and engineering principles related to modern technology, teaching students how engineers design technical products; providing students with hands-on design of hightech devices; preparing students to pursue post-secondary education in engineering and related disciplines; and opening new career opportunities. Key Elements in Developing Effective Design Challenges (The Journal of the Learning Sciences, Vol. 9, No. 3, 2000), it is important that the design/build exercises involve increasing cooperation through the use of tests against nature, large dynamic ranges in performance, initial prototype designs, and alternative methods of recording and presenting results.
