Rotated structures formed by Pd and Cu deposits on the Si(111)7×7 surface are discussed. Pd and Cu form a commensurate √3 × √3 and an incommensurate “5×5” structure at 1 ML coverage, respectively. Trimer configurations formed by metal atoms are rotated by a small angle away from the symmetry position to lower the surface symmetry of the Si(111)7×7 structure. A similar rotation occurs in a “9×9” incommensurate structure of Al on Si.
