An opportunity was afforded during some recent eruptions of Hlawaiian voleanoes to examuine the gases issuing from a solfat'aric fumarole (9Sulfur Bank. Hawaii Natioinal Park, Kilauea, Hawaii) that is in close physical association with the two active volcanoes of the islaind of Hawaii (_Mauna Loa and Kilauea). The desirability of a systematic routine of analysis of fumarolic gases has long been recognized, and a start was miade on such a project at Sulfur Banki by Ballar-d aind Payne (1). These inivestigators also noted that the appearance of hydrogen sulfide at this funiarole seemed to be coincidenit with the eruption of nearbyMlauna Loa (2). In the preseInt work (, 3') samples of gas were secured fromi pipes that were sunk at Sulfur Bank (around 192'2. Represeintative samples were obtained in gas samiipling bulbs of both the evacuated ancd the saample-isolation types. These were removed to the laboratory and were subjected to analysis by a lowpressure tecnique (4) that was capable of anialyzilln, gas samples as small as 0.01 cm3 STP, and of detecting componenits present to the extent of 0.2 percent by
