We have used ROSAT PSPC observations to determine the total gravitating mass in a sample of 9 groups and clusters of galaxies. All of these clusters (spanning a range in gas temperatures of 1.0 to 8 keV) have mass‐to‐light ratios of 100–150 M⊙/L⊙. This indicates that rich clusters do not contain any more dark matter than individual galaxies. We also find that the ratio of total mass‐to‐luminous mass (hot gas and stars) uniformly decreases from galaxies, to groups, to clusters. Only 10% of the gravitating mass in galaxies and groups can be accounted for while 30% is observable in rich clusters. This indicates that the universe becomes ‘‘brighter’’ on larger scales not ‘‘darker.’’
