On 22 and 23 September 1993, a group of basic scientists, neurologists and gastroenterologists came together in Omaha, Nebraska, USA, to discuss gastrointestinal dysfunction in neurological disease. Though gastrointestinal symptoms and overt gut dysfunction are common among patients with a variety of neurological disorders, their pathophysiology, evaluation and management have not received great attention and the investigator or clinician seeking information or guidance in this area will not be encouraged by the fact that available information is dissipated among a diverse array of journals and monographs: hence the impetus to organize this symposium. The first session was devoted to overviews of ‘Basic Gastroneurology’ the goal being to set the stage for the clinical topics to follow. Presentations on the modulation of gut function via the central nervous system [Richard Gillis, Georgetown University, Washington, DC, USA) and the enteric nervous system (Jeffrey Conklin, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA, USA) revealed the tremendous explosion in our understanding of the various levels of control of gut motor function, in particular. The clear description of the nuclei and neuronal pathways within the central nervous system (CNS) associated with various gastrointestinal motor functions provides a clear basis for the understanding of the pathophysiology of gastrointestinal dysfunctions encountered in various neurological diseases, a theme returned to by several speakers later in the symposium. Similarly, the delineation of those gut functions which can be initiated and modulated by the nervous system intrinsic to the gut (the enteric nervous system) has
