The oxidation of NiAI has been studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM, respectively), and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). It was observed that during the oxidation of several compositions of the intermetallic compound NiAI an intermediate layer of mixed oxide formed between the metal and the alumina scale. Interfacial voids (which are associated with spalling of the oxide) and vacancy dislocation loops were observed in all the alloys examined. Spalling can be delayed by abrading the metal surface prior to oxidation. The origin of the vacancies which give rise to these defects is discussed in terms of (a) vacancy injection, (b) unequal diffusion rates of Ni and Al in NiAI and (c) stress.
