The requirement that long-term averages of the meteorological elements should vary smoothly in space and time ensures that, in spite of the paucity and relatively short periods of the observations in some areas, the climatology of the Southern Hemisphere presented in Chapters 3 to 6 should possess a good degree of reliability. On the other hand, the inadequacy of daily observations in large areas of the hemisphere, particularly in winter, places a measure of uncertainty on the findings concerning the properties and behavior of the synoptic-scale disturbances in the areas of sparse data. This applies whether the maps are analyzed historically, i.e., in retrospect after an optimum of data has been collected, or whether they are current maps prepared routinely from data received via telecommunication channels, although it must be recognized that operational maps are as a rule inferior to historical maps.
