The central time required for reflex activation of a given flexor motoneuron following stimulation of cutaneous or muscular afferent fibers was determined. Single shock stimulation of either muscular or cutaneous fibers evoked as a rule a single impulse discharge from each motoneuron. The central time of reflex discharge following muscular stimulation amounted to 1 msec. Following stimulation of cutaneous fibers, the central time varied between wide limits in different exptl. situations, but was never less than 2.5 msec. The variations of the central time of a given unit activated by stimulation of skin fibers are discontinuous, the unit tending to fire at certain intervals after the stimulus and not at other times. The results support the view that reflexes of skin origin are subserved by plurisynaptic paths.
