The pink-tide governments in Brazil implemented highly innovative social policies that helped to decrease overall levels of income inequality, leading to the creation of a “new middle class.” Although these policies led to notable social transformation, the historic structures of class domination did not change. On the contrary, with the help of state subsidies, Brazil’s entrepreneurs expanded to other parts of the Global South; an increase in the number as well as the size of the latifundios took place; and agribusiness practices reduced employment in rural areas, while intensifying land conflicts with indigenous peoples. Using longitudinal quantitative data from censuses and official reports, and archival data, this chapter will argue that Brazil is witnessing yet another stage in the long and traditional history of elite adaptation and metamorphosis.
