Incremental sheet metal forming for the production of parts in small lot sizes is of growing interest both in research and in industry. Recently, incremental sheet metal forming at elevated temperatures has been investigated concerning reduced forming forces, reduced spring-back, increased geometrical accuracy of the formed parts and its applicability for hard-to-form materials. This paper gives an overview of the used heating methods in a state-of-the-art analysis. It focuses on regional Joule heating of the moving forming zone with up to two moving forming tools. The theoretical background is presented for Joule heating and occurring electrical resistances in the setup. After delivering a process design to achieve the desired characteristics, this work presents a simplified model for the calculation of the temperature of the forming zone.
