The purpose of this study is to analyze research trends and issues in Augmented Reality (AR)-based education from 2008 to 2019. To find the articles that used or focused on AR-based education, the study used major data from a search of articles in education and examined those published in the KCI (Korean Citation Index), which the authors further narrowed down to 75 articles. Their relation to AR-based education was analyzed by publication year, research methods, research variables, target groups, subjects, education field, and technologies implemented. The results were as follows. First, the number of studies on AR education rapidly increased from 2014 until 2019. Second, quantitative studies were the most frequent types, and experimental methods were used the most used for data collection. Third, most variables used in AR-based education were academic achievement, learning flow, and learning achievement. Fourth, the target groups among which AR-based education were most frequently carried out were primary education, early childhood education, and adults, and AR was also applied the most in the fields of science and language. Finally, most of the applications developed for education settings used markers. In conclusion, the paper discusses future trends and visions as well as opportunities for further research in AR within education.
