The technical advantages of helical computed tomography(CT) may prove to have even greater effect in children than has been shown in adults. Despite this potential for improved imaging, there is only limited scientific evidence that helical CT in children has resulted in improved diagnosis. In effect, there is little need for this validation since helical CT has become standard CT (1), and the focus for pediatric helical CT should be how, not why. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to present the unique aspects of pediatric helical CT by emphasizing techniques and relating them to contemporary applications. Since the majority of body applications in CT involve the chest, abdomen, and pelvis (2), discussion will be limited to these regions and will focus on helical CT. Issues that do not differ, such as sedation and oral contrast material, will not be discussed. Examples of disease processes are selected as an illustration of a special technique or application of helical technology in children. More detailed information on specific applications for body CT in children is available in several recent reviews (3-5).
