In the course of systematic experiments carried out by various physical techniques (1) we studied amorphous polycarbonate by means of electron microscopic methods. These investigations were conducted with the purpose of understanding better the mechanical behavior of this polymer when annealed at elevated temperatures below the glass transition temperature T,. The measurements were carried out on unoriented films of polycarbonate from bisphenol A, with a thickness of 200 p, produced by Farbenfabriken Bayer AG, Leverkusen. The starting conditions were defined by heating up the samples beyond T,(160 C.) and subsequently quenching them in ice water. Electron microscopic exposures were taken from carbon replicas produced from the sample after being shadowed by platinum. Electron microscopic studies on the surface of untreated amorphous polycarbonate yield no detailed structures in the morphology of the sam-ple. Removing the surface layers by means of an ion-etching technique described elsewhere (2) produces a certain granularity (Fig. la) consisting of grains in the range of less than 100 A. which are similar to the ball-like structures observed by Geil (3) in the case of poly (ethy1-ene terephthalate) in the meantime. After annealing the sample 72 hr. at llOC., far below T,(150" C.), however, a replica taken from an ion-
