Dear Sir, Tea possesses a number of health-protecting properties such as prevention of cardiovascular diseases and cancers. Green tea is rich in polyphenols which are weakly acidic, capable of dissolving the insoluble and rigid calcium oxalate which was proposed as one of the major causes of heart disease. Green tea is also rich in alkaloids, some of which can form salts with acids, reducing the local concentration of strong acids that are mutagenic and carcinogenic, consequently lowering cancer risks. Moreover, teas contain some amount of caffeine, which was proposed to protect the heart after modest consumption of coffee. Weak organic acids and other substances in teas also help dissolve insoluble salts and counteract the formation of strong acids. The beneficial effects and downsides of teas should be judged in a case-specific manner, and individuals need to adhere to a healthy lifestyle.
