The reversible change of critical current Ic as a function of strain ϵ in RE-123 coated conductors (where RE represent rare earth) is studied in association with critical temperature (Tc) measurements. In Y-123 based coated conductors, the positive strain dependence of the critical temperature determines the critical current variation Ic(ϵ). The origin of this Tc(ϵ) variation is discussed in terms of cell parameter change and local superconductivity enhancement induced by strain. The situation is quite different in Dy-123 coated conductors: both Ic and Tc decrease with strain while the amplitude of the Ic change is now about three times larger than the Tc one. Such results point to the existence of stress sensitive defects in these materials.
