Summary
Various matters relevant to the evolution of cichlid fishes in African lakes are discussed, with especial reference to Lake Victoria. These include the role of behaviour as an initiator of speciation and morphological change and as a guider of long-term evolution; the role of generalisation as well as specialisation in cichlid evolution; various problems concerned with male coloration and species recognition in the deep ill-lit waters of Lake Victoria, and with the absence of a zooplankton-eating cichlid from that lake; some of the problems, both behavioural and morphological, associated with the habit of paedophagy; the criteria of phylogeny among the constituent members of the species flocks of the great lakes; the ecological significance of stenotopy and eurytopy in speciation; the different speciation patterns displayed in different lakes, and certain matters concerning the process of speciation; some theoretical considerations of speciation and adaptation in relation to time; and the possible reasons for cichlid success in the Great Lakes.
4. Das Fehlen von Zooplanktonfressern im Victoria-See.
