they do not strengthen their muscles and will not be able to walk very far. They have to be encouraged to get out of the pushchair, and walk part of the way. Over time, this will encourage them to be prepared to walk on a regular basis, making them stronger and fitter. Older children become bored very quickly – giving them reasons to continue walking will solve the problem. By walking just that bit further each time, children get used to the idea of going for a walk and actually enjoying it. Never say just how far you plan to walk – even half a mile sounds a long way to a young child. Instead, say you are going to a wood, to visit the park, or for a scramble among the sand dunes. This will be much more appealing to children. Look, too, for unusual themed walks. Many places have sculpture or nature trails that can be followed. Near where I live, in Norfolk, there is even a musical trail with giant instruments such as drums, xylophones and shakers to be found at different places within the wood. Walking with children
