While listening to words tape-recorded in the english language by both americans and japanese, the same 8 americans and 11 japanese ss were tested to see if they could distinguish which words contained" l" and which words contained" r". The japanese ss were inaccurate in their auditory discrimination between" l" and" r" even when they heard the voices of the americans. The japanese ss whose english-language ability was best had relatively good pronunciation of" l" and" r" compared to their poor auditory discrimination. It is suggested that the auditory discrimination of syllables develops through practice in speech and hearing from early childhood. Without such practice there is considerable difficulty in discriminating them.(french & german summaries)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)
