Photochemical sensitisation by dyes was first discovered by Vogel in 1873 in the photosensitisation of the photographic plate to the yellow and green region of the spectrum. But it was not until the beginning of the twentieth century that the" photodynamical effect" in solution was discovered, l ie the acceleration of oxidation by molecular oxygen of various substances in the presence of fluorescent dyes under the influence of light.
