Spin-lattice relaxation times have been used to characterize parent carbonizable material in terms of the size and shape of optical texture of the resultant coke, in order to predict optical texture. Materials with values of spin-lattice relaxation time less than 300 ms produce cokes which are either isotropic or anisotropic; with values between 300 and 600 ms produce cokes with optical texture of fine mosaics; with values between 500 and 800 ms produce optical texture of coarse mosaic; and with values greater than 800 ms produce cokes which exhibit flow-type anisotropy.
