Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary malignancy of the liver and is one of the most common cancers worldwide, with over 80% of cases diagnosed in developing countries in sub-Sahara Africa and Southeast Asia (1). In the United States alone, HCC incidence has more than tripled over the past three decades due to an increased prevalence of liver cirrhosis, which is the major risk factor for HCC.
