The possibility that fertility drugs may increase a woman's risk of ovarian cancer is disturbing, particularly to infertile couples and the professionals who treat them. This possibility was raised recently by the report of a positive association between risk of ovarian cancer and prior treatment with fertility medications, based on the combined analysis of three case-control studies (Whittemore et al., 1992). The association was reported as part of a general investigation of reproductive characteristics and exogenous hormone use in relation to ovarian cancer risk, obtained by analysing the combined data from twelve US casecontrol studies of ovarian cancer. The analysis was conducted by the Collaborative Ovarian Cancer Group (COCG), a consortium of the Principal Investigators of the twelve studies. The authors also reported negative associations between ovarian cancer risk and pregnancy, lactation and use of oral contraceptives. The distress caused by the reported association between ovarian cancer risk and use of fertility drugs is particularly acute for clinicians treating infertility, for whom patient welfare, patient counselling, and issues of potential liability and professional status are of concern.
