In teleosts the dorsal lip of the blastopore, when transplanted to young gastrulae, induces embryo formation. The nature of structures induced from the embryonic shield is determined by the reactions of the responding shield cells, that of structures induced from the extra-embryonic epithelium is governed by self-differentiation of the dorsal lip graft. The fact that control of differentiation by inducing and reacting cells can be demonstrated separately by exps. performed under different conditions signifies that both processes are involved in normal embryo-formation. Differentiation is controlled, however, not by these interactions alone. Shield material when implanted on the yolk-sac epithelium can differentiate more types of structure than the same cells would have produced had they not been removed; thus inhibitions imposed by surrounding cells are important in limiting the types of structure which any particular group of cells is able to differentiate. Materials from the dorsal lip or elsewhere in the embryonic-shield when transplanted to new shield locations in some cases preserve their own character, but in others are transformed to structures the nature of which is influenced by their location in the host. The fact that self-differentiation of dorsal lip grafts can be suppressed by the host gives further evidence of interaction between inducing and responding systems.
