Cerebral flow and metabolism were studied in a 44-year-old patient who was comatose due to St. Louis encephalitis. Although cerebral blood flow was normal, cerebral oxygen uptake was markedly reduced, and he had a significant reduction of arterial carbon dioxide tension.
